Gaston Caperton is an American businessman and politician who served as the 31st Governor of West Virginia from 1989 to 1997. He was born on February 2, 1940 in Charleston, West Virginia.
Caperton attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. He later went on to earn a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School in 1967.
Before entering politics, Caperton had a successful career in the insurance industry, serving as the president of the United States' fifth-largest independent insurance brokerage firm, the Southeastern Group, Inc.
As Governor of West Virginia, Caperton focused on improving the state's education system, expanding economic development, and balancing the state budget. He was known for his bipartisan approach to governing and for his efforts to bring new industries to West Virginia.
